Local Transport Phu Quoc — No Taxi Needed
You do not need a taxi to get around Phu Quoc. A motorbike rental covers the entire island for $5–7/day. Grab handles short hops from $2. Walking works fine for central Duong Dong. Here is how to move around the island cheaply, skip overpriced airport touts, and never pay taxi rates for a ride that costs a third less by app.
The first question most guests ask before arrival is whether they need to pre-arrange a taxi service for the week. They do not. Phu Quoc is a small island — 574 sq km, but the places you actually go are all clustered on the western coast. A motorbike covers it. Grab fills the gaps. The whole transport situation is simpler than it looks from the outside, and considerably cheaper than taxi rates.
What catches people out is the airport exit. A row of drivers quote $20 for a ride that should cost $7–10. That one moment sets the wrong expectations for the whole trip. This guide starts there and works through every realistic way to move around the island without overpaying.
Surviving the Airport Exit
Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) sits roughly 9–10 km southeast of Duong Dong — not "just outside town" as some posts claim; it is a proper road trip of 15–20 minutes depending on traffic. That distance matters because it gives tout drivers a story: "it is far, it is late, you have bags." The quote starts at $20 or more.
The actual fair fare to Duong Dong is $7–10. There is an official fixed-rate taxi desk inside the arrivals hall — walk past anyone who approaches you outside and find it before you exit. The desk price is set, legitimate, and around what you would pay on the Grab meter anyway. If you want Grab specifically, open the app while still inside and wait for a driver to accept before stepping out. Grab tends to work at the airport but sometimes takes 5–10 minutes to match at quieter hours.
What I tell guests: if you land in the evening or have heavy bags, just take the official airport taxi. It is fair value for that one transfer. From the next morning, rent a motorbike and you will not need a taxi again for the whole trip.
Motorbike Rental — the Real Island Option
Automatic scooters are everywhere on Phu Quoc. Most accommodation has them, most tour shops rent them, and the going rate is $5–7 per day or $80–100 per month. For a week-long trip, that is $35–49 total to go anywhere on the island, at any time, without waiting for anyone. It is the only transport that actually makes the whole island accessible.
The roads on the main coastal route (QL1A running north-south along the west side) are paved and in good condition. Traffic is light compared to mainland Vietnam — nothing like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Most adult visitors who can ride a bicycle can manage an automatic scooter here within a day. The island is small enough that getting lost is a minor inconvenience, not a problem.
Two honest warnings. First, a few northern tracks — particularly around the national park and toward Ganh Dau cape — are unpaved red-earth roads that get genuinely muddy in rainy season (May–October). Stick to the main road if it has been raining and you are on a standard scooter. Second, helmets are not optional. Both for legal reasons and practical ones — it is still traffic.
Fuel is cheap and petrol stations are common along the main road. Fill up in Duong Dong before heading north or south to avoid running short on quieter stretches. Most scooters hold enough fuel for a full island loop without stopping, but do not assume.
For stays of two weeks or more, ask about a monthly rate rather than daily. Monthly usually runs $80–100 including a helmet, while daily rates add up to $140+ over 30 days. Most rental shops near the Night Market will negotiate the monthly rate on the spot. Our Phu Quoc Homestay can also connect you directly with a reliable rental contact — no commission, just the honest rate.
Grab on Phu Quoc — What Actually Works
Grab operates on Phu Quoc and works reliably in the main tourism corridor from Ong Lang down through Duong Dong to about 15 km south on Long Beach. Outside that zone — far north or far south — driver availability drops off noticeably, and waits of 15–25 minutes are common.
GrabBike (motorbike taxi) is the everyday option for short hops. Typical fares: Duong Dong to Ong Lang around $2–3, within central Duong Dong $1–2, to the southern resort area near Sao Beach $8–12. GrabCar is available and costs 2–3x GrabBike for the same route — worth it if you have bags or are traveling with more than one person who cannot share a motorbike.
One thing to know: peak evening hours around the Night Market (6–8 pm) sometimes cause surges. Request GrabCar a few minutes before you need to leave, not when you are already standing outside.
Mai Linh Taxis — When to Use One
Mai Linh is the main legitimate metered taxi company on Phu Quoc. Their green-branded cars are reliable, have working meters, and the drivers are professional. If you see a taxi without a meter or from an unfamiliar company, agree the price before getting in and check it against the Grab app estimate first.
Other local taxi companies also work on the island, and their meters and drivers vary. Whatever car you get, check that the meter is switched on before you set off; if it is not, use Mai Linh or Grab instead.
Metered taxis are most useful when Grab is slow (late night, far south, ferry port arrival) or when you have enough luggage that a motorbike is impractical. For everything else, Grab or your own scooter is faster and cheaper.
Walking in Duong Dong
Central Duong Dong is genuinely walkable. From the heart of the town to Long Beach is about 5–8 minutes on foot. The Night Market is 10 minutes' walk from most accommodation in the town center. Pharmacies, ATMs, restaurants, tour operators, and dive shops are all within a 15-minute walk of each other.
Beyond the town center, walking stops making sense. Ong Lang is 8 km north — a 90-minute walk nobody takes. The southern reaches of Long Beach are 10–25 km away. The island is not set up for pedestrians outside Duong Dong, which is why a motorbike or Grab is not optional if you want to explore.
Private Car Hire for Groups
A private car with driver runs $40–60 for a full day. For a group of three or four splitting the cost, that is $10–15 each — often cheaper than individual GrabCar rides and far more flexible. The driver waits at each stop, knows the roads, and can suggest timing around tides (useful for the eastern coast and Ham Ninh).
This option is particularly good for covering the southern circuit in one day: Sao Beach, An Thoi port area, the cable car viewpoint, and a Sim wine stop on the way back. By motorbike, that loop is fine. By private car with four people, the total cost works out almost the same and you can carry far more gear.
Most accommodation, including ours, can arrange this with one day's notice. Prices are generally consistent; no need to shop around extensively.
Getting from Bai Vong Ferry Port
Bai Vong is the main ferry arrival port on the east side of the island — where speedboats and ferries from Ha Tien on the mainland dock. It is about 27 km by road from Duong Dong, which takes 40–50 minutes. This surprises people who look at the map and see it looks closer; the road loops around the southern end of the island.
Expect to pay 200,000–300,000 VND ($8–12) for a transfer from Bai Vong to Duong Dong. The boat companies sometimes offer shared van transfers at the dock — these are often the cheapest option and convenient if you are going to Duong Dong. Alternatively, book a GrabCar from the app as you disembark, though driver availability at Bai Vong can be patchy during off-peak sailings.
Fare Reference Table
Use this as a quick reference for typical fares. All prices are approximate for 2026 — check Grab in-app for live pricing.

Practical Tips to Avoid Overcharging
Open the Grab app before you need it and check the estimate for your route. That number — whatever Grab quotes — is close to the fair market price. Any driver quoting more than 20–30% above that is charging a tourist rate.
At the airport specifically: ignore anyone who approaches you in the exit area and walk directly inside to the official taxi desk, or wait by the exit doors while the Grab driver locates you. The extra three minutes of patience saves $10–15.
For metered Mai Linh taxis, always confirm the meter is running when you get in. "Meter on?" is understood. If a driver wants a fixed price instead of the meter, use Grab or negotiate only if you already know the fair fare for that route from the table above.
One thing that catches people at the ferry port: shared van transfers at Bai Vong are legitimate and usually cheaper than a solo GrabCar. The trade-off is waiting for the van to fill — typically 15–25 minutes after the boat docks. If you are in a hurry, Grab is more reliable than waiting.
