Before You Arrive

What to bring: Phu Quoc is tropical, so pack light and breathable clothing. Essentials include: sunscreen (SPF 50+ recommended), insect repellent, a light rain jacket (especially May-October), comfortable walking shoes or sandals, and a swimsuit. We provide towels, linens, and basic toiletries. If you have preferred shampoo or skincare products, bring them — international brands are available in Duong Dong but at higher prices than back home.

Currency and ATMs: Vietnam uses Vietnamese Dong (VND). ATMs accepting international Visa and Mastercard are available within a five-minute walk of our homestay — Vietcombank and BIDV ATMs have the best exchange rates and lowest fees. We accept both USD and VND for room payments. The current exchange rate is approximately 25,000 VND per 1 USD. Tip: withdraw VND from ATMs for daily expenses and pay for accommodation in USD or via bank transfer for the best value.

SIM cards and mobile data: Purchase a Vietnamese SIM card at the airport upon arrival or at a phone shop in Duong Dong (five-minute walk from our homestay). We recommend Viettel or Mobifone — both offer 30-day prepaid packages with 30-60 GB of 4G data for $5-10. The staff will set it up for you. Having local data is useful for Grab rides, Google Maps navigation, and WhatsApp communication.

Visa requirements: Phu Quoc offers visa-free entry for up to 30 days for citizens of many countries when you fly directly to Phu Quoc International Airport. For stays longer than 30 days, you will need a Vietnamese e-visa (available online, 90 days, extendable). Always check the latest visa requirements for your nationality before travel, as policies can change.

During Your Stay

Nearby pharmacies: There are several pharmacies within a five-minute walk of our homestay in Duong Dong. Most stock common medications including pain relievers, antihistamines, anti-diarrhea medication, and basic first aid supplies. For serious medical issues, Vinmec International Hospital is on the island and provides quality healthcare with English-speaking staff.

Local food recommendations: We maintain a printed and digital guide of our favorite restaurants in the area, categorized by cuisine and budget. Our top picks for first-timers: the Night Market for grilled seafood (five-minute walk), Quan Ut for authentic Vietnamese pho, and Chuon Chuon Bistro for Western comfort food. For street food, try the banh mi ladies near the main market — the best sandwiches on the island for under $1.

Weather expectations: Phu Quoc has two seasons — dry (November-April) and wet (May-October). During dry season, expect sunny skies, temperatures of 28-32 degrees Celsius, and calm seas. During wet season, mornings are often sunny with afternoon rain showers lasting one to two hours. The island is green and lush during wet season, and prices are significantly lower. Motorbike safety: If you rent a scooter from us, always wear a helmet (we provide them), avoid driving at night on unlit roads, drive slowly in rain (roads can be slippery), and never drink and drive. The island's roads are generally in good condition, but watch for potholes on some rural roads. We will give you a safety briefing and help you feel comfortable before you ride out.

Useful Vietnamese phrases: While English is widely understood in tourist areas, a few Vietnamese phrases go a long way: "Xin chao" (hello), "Cam on" (thank you), "Bao nhieu?" (how much?), "Ngon qua!" (delicious!), "Mot, hai, ba, yo!" (cheers! — literally one, two, three, cheers). Locals truly appreciate the effort, and you will often get better prices and bigger smiles.

Practical Information

Electricity: Vietnam uses 220V with type A, C, and F outlets. If you are coming from the US, UK, or Australia, bring a universal adapter. We have a few spare adapters available for guests to borrow.

Drinking water: Do not drink tap water in Vietnam. We provide free filtered drinking water at the homestay. Bottled water is available everywhere for $0.20-0.50 per 500ml bottle.

Laundry: We offer laundry service at $2/kg with same-day return. Long-term guests can use the washing machine free of charge.

Safety: Phu Quoc is one of the safest places in Southeast Asia. Violent crime against tourists is virtually unheard of. Use common sense — lock your room, do not leave valuables on the beach, and be aware of your belongings in crowded markets. Our homestay has secure rooms with individual locks and a safe residential neighborhood.
